Background

The Aarhus Convention, adopted in June 1998 in Aarhus, Denmark, has been ratified by 47 parties including the European Union. Five of the project countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) have ratified the convention. There has also been interest on the part of Kosovo* in implementing the principles of the convention.

The Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers, adopted in May 2003 in Kyiv, Ukraine, has been ratified by 35 parties including the European Union. Among SEE countries, Albania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia had ratified the protocol as of the end of 2013.
