Support Establishment and Advancement of Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTR) in Western Balkan Countries and in Moldova

On March 1, 2015, the new project “Support Establishment and Advancement of PRTRs in Western Balkan Countries and Moldova” was launched by the REC. Over the next two years the project will assist four parties to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (the PRTR Protocol): Albania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova and Serbia in improving the efficiency of already functioning PRTRs or to put in place operational PRTRs.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo*, stakeholder discussions will give impetus to the PRTR development process. The project will evaluate the current situation and develop proposals for future steps.

A regional experience-sharing workshop will take place during the second year of the project in order to support project partners to exchange information, share knowledge with each other and with EU countries, and learn from best practices.

Project activities will be implemented in line with the PRTR Protocol and the EU’s E-PRTR system, and in close cooperation with PRTR focal points, the respective ministries and agencies of the project countries, as well as the PRTR Protocol and Aarhus Convention bodies and secretariat. Synergies will also be developed with other ongoing PRTR projects.
